NHRC LAUNCHES DASHBOARD FOR MONTHLY REPORT OF HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched a dashboard and observatory system for monthly collation and reportage of human rights violations across the country. The dashboard which is an overview of the current human rights violations comprises cases collated across the 36 states and the federal capital territory.
Unveiling the january report which is the inaugural edition, the senior human rights adviser, Mr Hillary Ogbonna who presented the report on behalf of the commission on tuesday in Abuja said that the new system will serve as easy access to monthly collation, analysis, reporting and accountability on human rights violations.
He explained that the dashboard is a day to day violations collated into monthly reporting, analysis and graphics presentations while the observatory will capture reporting, monitoring and data analysis of human rights incidences that happened across the country.
He said that it is a commitment required to protect human rights and to report on the progress made in ensuring that protections are in place for affected people.
He pointed out that accurate data on human rights is essential, both for reliable reporting and to meet international commitments.
He advised that citizens should make use of the increased awareness on the need to report cases of human rights violations to the commission.
He explained that the commission has a viable system where people do not need to pass through the rigour of physical appearance to report cases revealing that there are 38 collation points
across the country supervised by the national headquarters for effective monitor, report and analysis of cases.
“In doing this, the Commission is acting in line with its mandate as stated in Sections (5) of the NHRC Act of 2010 as amended”
“The commission is equipped with toll-free lines and short codes for easy and cost-free access to complaints by members of the public”.
“The NHRC is putting everything in place to ensure that Nigerians can have confidence that when they call their complaints will not go unheard”.
According to the report, the january 2024 situation dashboard showed that around 1147 cases of complaints were received across the 36 states including FCT.
Mr. Hillary while giving the break down of the figure Said that 528 complaints were on domestic violence , followed by violations by state actor which account for 11% , private sector actor 6%, economic, social and cultural right violations 8%, and the violations of rights to life 5%
“The total of human rights violations occured largely in Abuja with a total number of 382 cases of rights violations , 86 in North Central, North west 118 , South- south 75, North east 66
He said that the commission is saddened by kidnapping and other cases that increased in the month of january especially the violent cases in plateau state and the cases of attacks on traditional rulers in Ekiti and Kwara states.
“He noted that 125 kidnapped cases were recorded and 56 Killings , 10 children were tortured, 22 children were kidnapped and 12 children were killed
He said that the worst rights violations in the country are recurring mass atrocities and crimes, kidnappings, incessant extra-judicial killings and torture, inhuman and degrading treatment, discrimination, injustice and gross inequalities, rape, sexual and gender based violence, and above all, impunity, weak institutions and lack of political will to hold perpetrators accountable for several types of human rights violations.
