FUEL SUBSIDY REMOVAL: NIGERIANS PROTEST AGAINST HUNGER, BAD GOVERNANCE
Despite the court order that restricted the protest to designated public places in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and some volatile states, youths across the various states of the federation today started the much debated nation wide protest from August 1 to 10 to end hunger and bad governance in the country.
The protest tagged #end bad governance was planned to draw the attention of government to the challenges posed by the removal of fuel subsidy which resulted to hunger and inflation arising from the sky rocketing of the prices of essential commodities such as fuel, transportation, food items and so on.
The protesters who were mainly youths were seen gathering in large numbers chanting ” what are we saying?” “we are hungry” “what are we saying? “end bad government”.
In the usual public spaces monitored in FCT such as the unity fountain, eagle square, the central area surrounding the court assigned national stadium, it appeared that the youths were bent on disregarding the court order as they converged in sizeable groups chanting protest songs.
It would be recalled that the court in FCT and some states like Lagos had restricted the protest to designated venue to prevent it from turning chaotic.
The police and other law enforcement agencies at the gathering in public spaces and around FCT seemed to be helping the court to enforce its restriction order using teargas to disperse gatherings but there were no negativities in the FCT like even some neighbouring states where the protests were hijacked by hoodlums that led to negative experiences avoidable if the law enforcement had done like the FCT.
